The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has officially announced an extension of regular classes for Class X (HSLC) and Class XII (Higher Secondary) students. Due to major academic disruptions caused by recent devastating floods in multiple districts and the engagement of teachers in ongoing Census operations, the 2027 final board examinations have been pushed back from their traditional schedules.
Why Were the Classes and Exams Extended?
According to notifications issued by the board and confirmed by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, academic calendars took a significant hit due to two primary factors:
Severe Flooding: Several districts experienced heavy floods, leading to prolonged school closures and infrastructural damage.
Census Operations: Teaching staff across the state were heavily engaged in the large-scale Census duties, cutting into crucial instructional weeks.
Because of these interruptions, schools would not have been able to complete the required syllabus by the first week of February for Class X or by February 28 for Class XII.
Revised Academic Timeline for Classes 10 & 12
To ensure students get ample time to cover their course materials thoroughly without feeling rushed, the board has revised the terminal dates for regular classroom teaching:
Class X (HSLC) Timeline
Class: Class X (HSLC)
Original Timeline Expectation: Syllabus completion by early February
Extended Regular Classes Up To: February 22, 2027
Class XII (HS) Timeline
Class: Class XII (HS)
Original Timeline Expectation: Syllabus completion by late February
Extended Regular Classes Up To: March 8, 2027
What Happens to the Exam Dates?
Compared to previous academic years—where exams traditionally kicked off in mid-February (such as February 10 for HSLC and February 11 for HS finals in 2026)—the 2027 timelines are pushed back.
The ASSEB has stated that the exact dates and formal routines for the HSLC and Higher Secondary final examinations will be meticulously worked out and announced separately in alignment with the extended academic calendar. Lakhs of students gearing up for these major public examinations are advised to keep an eye on official announcements.
