Syed Nizamul Haque (November 24, 1957 – October 19, 2021) was a distinguished Indian educator, author, and pioneer in printing technology whose work profoundly shaped the educational and publishing landscapes of Assam. By bridging the gap between advanced printing technology and accessible educational materials, Haque left a lasting legacy on the region’s academic environment. Early Life and Education Born in Kacharihat, Golaghat, Assam, to the late Syed Muhibul Haque and late Syeda Aabida Khatun, Haque was raised in a culturally enriched environment. He began his foundational schooling at Kachirihat Prathamik Bidyalaya in Golaghat before attending Dergaon Higher Secondary School. Pursuing higher education in Guwahati, he studied at the prestigious Cotton College and ultimately earned his bachelor’s degree from Demoria College. Revolutionizing Assam’s Printing Industry Haque is widely recognized for modernizing Assam’s local printing sector. He possessed deep professional expertise in assembling and selling offset printing solutions and achieved a major milestone by introducing the Automatic Flatbed Printing Machine to the state. This technological leap significantly improved the quality and efficiency of local printing. His leadership in the sector culminated in his role as the Founding General Secretary of the All Assam Press Owners Association. Educational Leadership and Publishing In 1999, Haque founded the Assam School of Education, a pivotal non-governmental organization and educational book publishing house. Through this organization, he spearheaded numerous initiatives designed to enhance the academic ecosystem and improve student accessibility to quality learning materials across Assam. Beyond his own publishing house, Haque held several key administrative roles. He served as the administrator of the Dispur English Academy and was a governing member of the Manav Kalyan Jatiya Vidyalaya Trust in Kahilipara, Guwahati. Literary Contributions As an author, Haque contributed to both general literature and academic curricula. His published works span historical and social topics, including: In the educational sphere, he developed notable book series that became integral to Assam’s school curricula, such as the Dapoon How We Answered series and Eco-Club and Environmental Science. Philanthropy and Recognition Deeply committed to community upliftment, Haque was an active philanthropist who provided scholarships and awards to meritorious but financially disadvantaged students throughout Assam. He also engaged with significant national forums, including the National Conference of Dalit Writers and TERI, collaborating with various national education and environmental councils. In recognition of his extensive societal contributions, Haque was honored with the prestigious Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Award in 2007. Personal Life and Legacy Syed Nizamul Haque married Syeda Mohsina Begum in 1994, and the couple raised two children: a son, Syed Mehfooz Raiza, and a daughter, Syeda Tanfia Nizam. Haque passed away on October 19, 2021, following a battle with prostate cancer. To honor his memory and sustain his lifelong mission, his family and community established the Syed Nizamul Haque Memorial Awards, which continue to recognize exceptional contributions in education, printing technology, and community service in Assam.
